Lightning Tarstone Guide: Every Lightning Infusion in Mortal Shell 2
Both confirmed lightning tarstones in Mortal Shell 2 — Voltaic Crown and Voltaic Amber — with locations, Resolve costs, the best lightning tarstone build pairings, and the upgrade path that makes the effect permanent.
What lightning tarstones do in Mortal Shell 2
A lightning tarstone belongs to the Infusion category of Mortal Shell 2's tarstone system: it layers lightning damage onto every hit of the weapon or offhand it occupies. Of the 75 tarstones in the game, only two confirmed lightning tarstones exist — Voltaic Crown for weapons and Voltaic Amber for offhands. That scarcity is exactly why both matter: if you want lightning on your build, these are the only two sources.
Lightning is not new to Mortal Shell 2 — Proxima's kit already applies a lightning damage-over-time effect through her Biosampler ability. What a lightning tarstone adds is elemental pressure on your weapon swings, so every combo carries it. And because every Infusion tarstone becomes permanent at level 4, a maxed lightning tarstone keeps zapping at zero Resolve cost for the rest of the run.
Every lightning tarstone — full list
The complete lightning tarstone list, verified on Hotfix 2.0 + Balance Patch 1. One weapon lightning tarstone, one offhand lightning tarstone — that is the whole pool. Both follow the Infusion rules covered in the Tarstones guide.

Voltaic Crown — the weapon lightning tarstone
Voltaic Crown is the lightning tarstone most builds will actually use, because melee does most of your damage. It costs 30 Resolve while leveling; at level 4 the effect becomes permanent lightning — no cost, no re-activation, lightning on every swing for the rest of the playthrough.
You earn the stone by defeating the boss of the Nochtean Gate dungeon — mid-game timing that lands right around the Tarforge unlock, which is convenient: a freshly obtained lightning tarstone should be your next upgrade project. The Crown fits three weapon families, making it the most flexible weapon Infusion tied to a single element; Frost and Trauma stones are locked to exactly one weapon each.
Two practical notes. First, 30 Resolve is a real cost while the stone levels — pair it with Devout Stone (+Resolve gain) or fast attacks that generate Resolve efficiently. Second, XP only accrues while the stone is socketed, so slot your lightning tarstone into your main weapon immediately and let it ride normal progression rather than saving it for bosses.
Voltaic Amber — the offhand lightning tarstone
Voltaic Amber is the offhand-side lightning tarstone: 20 Resolve to activate, two offhands, permanent at max level. Pairing Crown and Amber is the only way to get lightning on both gear slots at once — a full lightning identity build.
One honest caveat: the Amber's retail location is still unconfirmed. Community reports have not converged on a verified pickup, and we mark it unconfirmed rather than guess — the same standard the Fix Center applies to fix claims. Plan around the Voltaic Crown as your confirmed lightning tarstone and treat the Amber as a bonus once located. Frequent-attack offhands get the most from any lightning tarstone — more attacks, more chances for the element to apply — but check the planner's Infusion slot for your specific offhand before spending Coins.
Best shell for a lightning tarstone build
Proxima, the Broodseeker, is the anchor for any lightning tarstone build. Her kit already runs on voltage: the Biosampler hook applies a Lightning DoT on its follow-up strike and releases a shockwave on success, the Imperion talent grants lightning immunity plus extra lightning damage and range, and Discharge adds a lightning AoE. Slotting a lightning tarstone onto Proxima's weapon stacks a third lightning source onto a shell built around the element — the most coherent pairing in Mortal Shell 2.
Proxima is also the friendliest shell — she unlocks without a boss fight, and Grafted Armor gives a base 15% chance to reduce incoming damage. That forgiveness matters while your lightning tarstone still costs 30 Resolve per activation. Full shell comparisons live in the Shell Tier List; Proxima sits in A tier as the best all-rounder.
Other shells can run a lightning tarstone fine — Infusions are weapon-bound, not shell-bound — but none of the other seven has native lightning synergy. On Tiel or Genessa you take the Crown for layered elemental damage, which is more total damage per swing on any shell.
Best weapons for lightning infusions
The documented pattern for lightning in Mortal Shell 2: fast weapons apply DoT layers more often — our Proxima notes call out the Axe and Dagger and the Black Needle as lightning DoT stackers. A lightning tarstone follows the same logic: fast swings give the element more hits to attach to per second.
The Voltaic Crown fits three weapon families, so there is a real choice. On slow heavy weapons the lightning tarstone still works — you trade application frequency for bigger single hits, becoming a flat elemental add instead of a DoT engine. Load your shortlist into the Build Planner and compare synergy notes before committing.
Weapon choice also sets your second Infusion: one Infusion slot per piece of gear, so a lightning tarstone on the weapon excludes Serpent Stone poison there. Full lightning identity means Crown on the weapon, Amber on the offhand, Proxima in the shell, Support stones (Auspicious, Headman's, Devout) handling crit and Resolve. The Shock Trooper build is the closest preset.
Upgrading a lightning tarstone to permanent
All Infusion tarstones level to 4 through kills while equipped, and a lightning tarstone is no exception. Levels 2+ also cost Coins, and upgrading happens at the Tarforge in Marrow Keep — unlocked by handing the Etching Needle (bone chest before Magdalena: cross the bridge, turn right at Ruk) to Franz. Full walkthrough in the Tarstones upgrade guide.
Worth an early Tarforge investment? If Proxima or a fast weapon is your main, yes. Our general priority puts a main weapon's Infusion around sixth; for a dedicated lightning build, promote the lightning tarstone to first or second — the level 4 permanence breakpoint removes the 30 Resolve cost entirely and changes how the whole build plays.
Lightning tarstone FAQ
How many lightning tarstones are in Mortal Shell 2?
Two confirmed: Voltaic Crown, the weapon lightning tarstone, and Voltaic Amber, the offhand lightning tarstone. Both are Infusion stones and both go permanent at level 4.
What does the Voltaic Crown lightning tarstone do?
It infuses your melee weapon's hits with lightning. It costs 30 Resolve while leveling; at level 4 it becomes a permanent lightning Infusion at zero cost. It fits three weapon families.
Where do I get the Voltaic Amber offhand lightning tarstone?
Its retail location is unconfirmed — community reports have not converged on a verified spot. The Voltaic Crown, by contrast, drops from the boss of the Nochtean Gate dungeon.
Which shell is best for a lightning tarstone build?
Proxima, the Broodseeker — Mortal Shell 2's only shell with native lightning synergy: Biosampler Lightning DoT, Imperion lightning immunity and damage, Discharge lightning AoE. She also unlocks without a boss fight.
Does a lightning tarstone stack with Proxima's lightning?
Both apply lightning effects, and fast weapons are documented to stack the DoT layers — but exact stacking values between a lightning tarstone and the Biosampler DoT are unpublished. Treat it as more lightning pressure, not a precise multiplier.
Is a lightning tarstone worth upgrading first?
For a dedicated lightning build, yes — promote it to the top of the order. The level 4 permanence breakpoint is the Infusion category's biggest spike and deletes the 30 Resolve activation cost.
