Why rankings differ between sites
Launch-period tier lists disagree sharply on two shells:
- Gragu — S on KeenGamer and TreyExGaming, C on allthings.how and GamesHorizon. The split is real: Gragu has the highest single-hit damage and ~78% crit ceiling, but he's strictly single-target. We rate him B — a specialist tool, not a general pick.
- Sariel — ratings from B to S. The survivability ceiling is the highest in the game, but so is the skill floor (Pain management is constant and punishing). We rate A — top tier in the right hands.
- Smert — anywhere from A to S. The only time-stop in the game and TreyExGaming's 5/5, but every Miracle costs half your current HP. We rate A.
HP and Resolve are usually inverse across shells — high HP pools generate Resolve slowly. Mortal Shell II has no Stamina: dodging, sprinting and blocking cost no independent resource, so the real economy is Durability (HP) and Resolve.

The Seal system (defense), in brief
Mortal Shell II replaces the first game's single Harden mechanic with 4 Seals — Guard, Harden, Parry and Gloomslayer. Only one is equipped at a time and switching is free. Red (unblockable) attacks can only be dodged.
| Seal | Defense | Timing window | Break damage | Safety net | Failure | Where to get |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Untarnished Seal | Guard (hold) / Perfect Guard (tap) | Forgiving (hold to block; Perfect Guard medium) | Perfect Guard: small | Yes — continuous block until Guard Meter drains | Guard Meter drained → stunned | Automatic (prologue) |
| Vatra's Seal | Harden (petrify) / Perfect Harden | Forgiving (instant press, frame-1 invulnerability) | Perfect: small | Yes — absorbs any single hit regardless of damage | Absorb then cooldown (8-16s depending on Shell) | Defeat the Tar Golem in Disciple's Grotto |
| Infinite Seal | Parry (block-counter) | Tightest (no hold; precise single press, 8-16 active frames) | ~3× Perfect Guard/Harden | None — a failed Parry takes full damage | Full damage, no Guard fallback | Complete Sester Genessa's tutorial in Marrow Keep |
| Slayer Seal | Gloomslayer (offhand Break) + Slayer Punch | N/A (ranged Break mechanic) | Offhand shots build Break | Yes — Riposte restores HP + Resolve | PERMANENTLY DISABLES that save's achievement (uninstalling does not restore it) | Marrow Keep — light the candle at the stone throne by the cliff |
Harden cooldowns are only publicly documented for 4 shells (Harros 12s→9s, Tiel 16s→12s, Eredrim 14s→10s, Solomon 10s→7s); the rest pending in-game testing.
FAQ
What is the best shell in Mortal Shell 2?
For most players Tiel (S) — highest mobility, best early carry, and no boss required to unlock. For the highest DPS ceiling, Genessa; for pure survivability, Sariel in practiced hands.
What shell should beginners start with?
Proxima or Eredrim. Proxima unlocks without a boss fight, has a zero-effort mitigation passive (Grafted Armor) and crowd control; Eredrim has the second-highest HP pool and the most forgiving boss learning curve.
How many shells are in Mortal Shell 2?
Eight: Tiel, Eredrim, Genessa, Smert, Proxima, Sariel, Lazlo and Gragu, plus the prologue shell Harros.
Can you switch shells in Mortal Shell 2?
Yes — found shells can be re-entered at their remains (or via unlock items later). Switching Seals is free and instant.
Does HP matter more than Resolve?
They trade off: high-HP shells generate Resolve slowly. With no Stamina in the game, the two real resources are Durability (HP) and Resolve.
